Licensed Independent Psychologist Associate
With Extensive Clinical Experience

C. David Maxey

I am a Licensed Independent Psychologist Associate (Oregon Board of Psychology License 5067) with extensive experience providing mental health services to children and youth over the past 24 years. I have a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with a Concentration in Children and Families from Bowling Green State University, and I completed a three-year residency through the Children’s Program in Portland, providing services to children and teens. I have maintained my private practice in Tigard since 2018, specializing in Clinical Psychology for children, teens, and young adults (approximately ages 4 to 25).

Individualized Evidence‑Based Approach

My evidence-based approach to therapy is individualized to each client’s needs, rather than following a step-by-step manual-based approach. I incorporate scientifically supported treatment modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Parent Management Training (PMT), and Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (formerly known as Collaborative Problem Solving). I have served as Board President for the Oregon Chapter of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science, and I am a member of the following professional organizations:

American Psychological Association Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology
Oregon Psychological Association The Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Association for Contextual Behavioral Science The American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders

Real‑World Experience
That Enhances My Clinical Services

During the school year, I offer after-school appointments to my private practice clients. Separate from my private practice, I work during the school day as the Director of Student Support alongside teachers and staff at a K-8 public charter school, where I have developed individualized supports for students with ADHD, Autism, and other diagnoses to meet their specific needs and complement the rigorous education that has consistently ranked my school in about the top 5% or better of public schools in Oregon (see US News). I bring these skills to my private work to help my clients access supports that teachers and families find practicable and effective.

Personal Experience
as a Parent

Having raised two children together with their mom, I know firsthand how important it is to find solutions that work for everyone involved in a child’s life, including parents and the rest of the family.

Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog

Outside of work, I enjoy my time with my family, including our affectionate Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We have fun playing euro-style board games, sharing a delicious meal and a good film, or simply exploring one of Tigard’s beautiful parks or trails. During the pandemic, I took up Animal Crossing: New Horizons with my kids, and although I don’t visit our island often anymore, I carry fond memories of discoveries, holidays, and events we shared there. Over the years, I’ve served on boards of various non-profit community organizations. In case you’re wondering, I use an initial in place of my first name, Charles, because I go by David (or Mr. Maxey).
